Experiences:
Unlike any other semester, the
past 14 weeks threw some of the most unexpected challenges my way. At the beginning
of the semester, I attended the classes while I was under quarantine. It was
the first time I attended the typography class virtually. Although the delivery
method had changed, I did not face many difficulties in understanding the
topics and exercise. In fact, I appreciate the fact that the lecturers were pre-recorded
and available for us to access at any time. Similarly, the recorded class
sessions also made it easier to rewind back and listen to areas I had doubts
in. Once I was released from quarantine, I joined the physical classes.
However, this did not las long due to CMCO. I face some major difficulties in attending
classes online during the first 2 weeks of CMCO as I did not have a Wi-Fi connection
installed. I tried my best to make sure this did not impact my project
progressions. Fortunately, I was able to push through and keep up with the rest
of the class. As the classes continued to be hosted over the web, it allowed me
to finish the work from the comfort of my home. Previously I experienced that I
can’t fully concentrate while trying to work in class, so staying home helped
me in that aspect.
Observations:
One of the main things I observed
this semester is the eagerness from most of the classmates. Especially during
Project 1A & B. When everyone was asked to post their works on Facebook comments,
the responses were better than I anticipated. This also made me realize that
this method of assessing progression and giving feedback is quicker. During
physical classes in last years semester, some of us had to wait a long time to
get our feedback. Since the feedback is given in front of everyone, it enabled
me to think critically and consider things that did not occur to me before. In
a way, I looked at this as an opportunity to gather as much feedback as I could,
whether it is applicable to my work or not as it could be beneficial for
future. Although we were all eager about our designs, some misconceptions were
followed by many of us. Mainly the use of key artwork in creating collaterals. I
noticed that many of us had trouble in translating the key artwork on to
certain collaterals without just simply slapping it onto the product. One
important thing I observed during further readings is to always look for resources
related to the project we are working on. Although I am not a frequent reader, I
was able to see the importance of expanding the knowledge through finding
different relevant sources.
Findings:
During this semester, I gained
extensive knowledge relevant to the creative design industry in the current
climate. During the Typographic Systems exercises, I briefly understood how these
systems are incorporated in layouts for magazines, books and other
publications. Working on the Type & Play exercises taught me to look for
inspiration from unconventional places, as they can inspire some unique
perspective. In my opinion, the most relevant and valuable contributions to my
skillset were during Project 1 and Project 2. Designing a key artwork and incorporating
it on to collaterals was something I thought I knew, but boy was I wrong. I learned
about how to think like a designer when developing a key artwork and how to
keep in mind its applications. Similar benefits were achieved from Project 2 as
well. Developing a full-scale typeface was not something I ever imagined doing.
But after this semester, I am intrigued to explore it further. Though paying
attention to details are crucial, I found out that I still need to work on my
time management as I tend to spend too much time overthinking every little
detail. Although this is the end of my final semester, I believe typography
will be a huge part of my career regardless of which industry I am in.
